On New Year’s Eve 2009, I told J. Hanson, the then-future editor of Catholic Phoenix, about my plan to launch a new blog on January 1, 2010. I would cleverly call it The Year I Just Finished and chronicle how I spent 2010 just finishing things I had previously abandoned in various states of completion. Yes, in 2010 I was going to be a finishing machine—no new projects, no new books, no new bandwagons jumped upon until I had melted the multi-colored paraffin pieces of my past into a fresh, polychromatic crayon with which I could sketch my future.
On January 1, 2011, I finally started finishing; those who know me well are astonished at my haste. Nevertheless, I have plunged into this project and will see it through to the end—either I will finish finishing or finishing will finish me. For help, I have a friend (codenamed HRG until he signs the release forms) who is joining me on this adventure. He also has some unfinished business, so we’ve pledged to hold each other accountable for one year.
My other secret weapon is the readers of Catholic Phoenix.
Over the next few posts, I’ll lay out the rules of engagement, some principles I intend to follow, my goals and hopes for the coming year, and then I’ll share my progress with you—not because you’re interested (my wife assures me you’re not), but because I am a pitiful man who needs all the help he can get. If you see me on the street, ask me how I’m finishing; if you see me starting something new, hit me with your shoe.
