Catholic Phoenix: The Contributors
Here’s who is contributing to Catholic Phoenix. Each author, of course, is responsible for his or her opinions.
- Alishia Hanson — Desert dweller who pines for rain, likes to read and sew but is frequently worn out at the current stage in her vocation.
- April Yeager — April, a “revert” to the Catholic faith, left the world of media and advertising to become a full-time wife and mother. She and her husband have been married for 22 years and have eight children. Most of April’s favorite times are spent homeschooling, catechizing children, reading the writings of the saints and entertaining the elderly in assisted living facilities.
- Atticus – Narrow-minded generalist; member in good standing of David Rieff’s Cult of the Amateur; fiction lover; proud husband and father; Catholic; lawyer by trade.
- Bette — Married to Mike (Captoe), a cradle Catholic, and Phoenician for 20 years. ICU nurse and mother to six, she understands the attraction of the contemplative life, but wouldn’t trade this life for even a minute. Well, maybe just for a minute.
- Captoe — Captoe is married to Bette, a father to four girls and two boys, a 1995 convert to the faith, and the blogger-in-chief at Inedible Ink. Why “Captoe?” It’s a business-casual reminder to not take oneself too seriously, and you already know someone named “Mike.”
- Charles Smith — Sinner extraordinaire, devotee of Reconciliation. Father of three, husband to Elisabeth, seeker of Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Pseudo-convert, having been baptized as an infant and fully entering the Church in 2008. Discerning the permanent diaconate while balancing vocation and career. Gun and pun enthusiast. Devoted husband, father, friend. Known to be a smart alec at times, he is trying to be less of a ready fire aim type, and more of a think, focus, pull thinker.
- Christina — Christina is a graduate of Thomas Aquinas College. She is a full time domestic artist and home-schooling mother, raising her children in the traditions of the True Faith.
- Cordelia — Cordelia is a cradle Catholic, native of Phoenix, and mother of five. She has spent time in France, though it could hardly be characterized as exile. If you want to make her happy you can either mention Hans Urs von Balthasar in a homily or take her to Pita Jungle.
- Danica — Danica works as a fitness instructor in a private facility. When she’s not selling the virtues of vigorous exercise to her clients, she’s selling the virtues of NFP to engaged couples with her loving husband. While she used to play the drum set rather loudly at various parishes in the valley, she has since repented; the drum sticks stay at home and the mantilla and the 1962 Missal come along instead.
- Denys Powlett-Jones – Denys Powlett-Jones is a recovering Nietzschean and convert to the Catholic faith. Now married with many children, the great regrets of his life are a) a nihilistic, misspent youth, and b) never having learned Greek. Denys thinks that whatever your station in life, you should probably be listening to more Bach. Denys can be reached at DenysPowlettJones@gmail.com.
- J. Hanson — Student of the law, teacher of Latin, father of four, and husband of one very wonderful woman.
- JoAnna — JoAnna is a former Lutheran who joined the Tiber Swim Team, class of 2003. She’s a native North Dakotan who wanted to escape the frigid climate and fled to Arizona with her family, and she absolutely loves the warm weather of Phoenix. She has a wonderful husband and five gorgeous children (three on earth, two in heaven), as well as a xenophobic cat.
- J. Prever — Joseph Prever is a freelance web designer. He thinks the desert is just beautiful, but his heart is still in New Hampshire. His website is www.bluetimesblue.com.
- Louisa — Louisa is a student at Thomas Aquinas College. She has lived in Phoenix since she was eight and likes to think she knows a few things about it. Unfortunately, she has not decided what she wants to do when she grows up. The one thing she does know is that she isn’t allowed to get married until she finishes grad school. In the meantime, she will be losing herself in whatever thick book crosses her path.
- Mary Jo — Mary Jo is a cradle Catholic who married the only nice Catholic boy at the public university she attended. They still are married 25 years later, the last 10 working at the same place. They have 3 kids ( including CP blogger Louisa) who drive them crazy and provide many opportunities for humility. Mary Jo enjoys coffee, books, and napping.
- Rob Drapeau — Rob is the happily married father of six wild children. He is a lifelong writer and teacher, a published poet, a devotee of G.K. Chesterton and an all-around good guy. He loves languages and learning and is reviled as notorious punster and unrepentant teller of corny jokes. He blogs, teaches, teaches some more, works as a business process writer for IBM, and operates wordSwell an incarnational writing company that could use your business.
- Scott Whitfield — Scott Whitfield is the husband of one and father of eight. Married in 1984, he was introduced to the Catholic faith by his first (and only) wife Lisa. He joined the Catholic Church in 1993. A retired Naval (reserve) officer, he has been in the world of business for over 20 years, the last 15 as a manager with a Fortune 50 company. He is an occasional contributor to Catholic Phoenix, previously posting under the pseudonym, Paterfamilias.
